I am a huge classic movie fan, especially melodramas, mysteries, and musicals from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. "They Say It's Wonderful" features some of my favorite songs from Hollywood musicals that have become jazz standards. Come along with me now as I share a few tales behind the tunes. In this tale behind the tune, I share how I came to love the 1940 tune "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered," music by Richard Rogers and lyrics by Lorenz Hart.
My Dad had a tremendous record collection, and as a young girl, I would spend hours playing certain records over and over again. One of those records was "The Concert Sinatra," and a tune that I played incessantly from the album was "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered." When I saw the movie musical "Pal Joey," in which the song was featured, I more fully understood the story behind Lorenz Hart's lyrics.
The musical, which starred Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra, and Kim Novak is a classic triangular tale of imperfect people falling in love in spite of themselves. Whenever I sing this song, I think about the morning-after scenes pictured here, which I find kind of heartbreaking, because clearly Rita's worldly wise character, Vera knows she shouldn't be falling for a selfish, womanizing, slick playboy who will likely never feel the way she feels "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."
