I am a huge classic movie fan, especially melodramas, mysteries, and musicals from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. "They Say It's Wonderful" features some of my favorite songs from Hollywood musicals that have become jazz standards.
Come along with me now as I share a few tales behind the tunes. In this tale behind the tune, I share how I came to love the 1958 tune, "Almost In Your Arms," music by Ray Evans and lyrics by Jay Livingston.
I first heard almost in your arms in the movie "Houseboat," which starred Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. Watching these two Hollywood greats on screen, you can see how a book is written in a look, while the soulful and lush recording of Sam Cooke singing "Almost In Your Arms" plays in the background.
For "They Say It's Wonderful," we recorded this tune in a medium swing tempo to evoke that sweet nervousness that comes with falling in love.
